Here & Queer: The Pride Renaissance
The Idea Behind the Designs:
I let creative concepts flow through my mind for quite some time. This project was not only the biggest I’ve taken on thus far in my career at the time, but anything I create I ensure it’s made with intention and authenticity. The “why” is a huge question I always ask myself when coming up with design concepts. I wanted this campaign to not only stand out visually, but historically and with purpose.
My heart landed on the creative concept of stained glass. Here was my reasoning:
The Renaissance was a time when the prevalence of public homosexuality increased, as did repression. While I was going through the Renaissance artworks - something caught my eye and that was the imagery in Renaissance stained glass. Before the Renaissance, stained glass was more expensive and was used in a more biblical aspect, but during the Renaissance period is when glass became more affordable and started appearing in more secular buildings (homes, public halls, businesses). As a result, nonreligious imagery became more common as this type of artwork progressed. The artworks would typically depict events and scenes of history.
The use of linear perspective was developed and used in Renaissance-style stained glass. The artists developed and relied heavily on brightly colored enamels. The special history and meaning carried by stained glass windows produced during the Renaissance have made them a valuable commodity in contemporary times and a special addition to any modern space.
